The main feature of the Antelope canyon in Arizona is its unusually curved red-red rocks, very similar in structure to the skins of young antelopes. Although do not expect to see fabulous animals here, because antelopes in the Arizona desert are not found exactly.
This structure of the canyon is a consequence of the climatic features of the state of Arizona. This is a dry place, but precipitation tends to fall here rarely, but abundantly. A stream of rainwater from the surrounding mountains mixed with sand along the narrow canyon and carved its unique walls.

The beauty of Antelope Canyon is not only fascinating, but also frightening: in 1998, an accident occurred here — tourists were caught in such a storm that suddenly struck Arizona. Unfortunately, 11 out of 12 people died inside the canyon. During our visit, we were lucky to avoid disaster, as the elements struck the day after we left page after seeing one of Arizona’s dramatic landmarks.
The size of the Antelope canyon, compared to the Colca canyon in Peru, is much smaller, but the attraction of the state of Arizona is much more famous among travelers around the world. Both of these wonders of nature capture the imagination and it is impossible to forget them. I recommend that all travelers in the United States do not regret paying for a Navajo tour and be sure to see Antelope Canyon!
Curious fact. Such a unique and magical miracle of nature could not go unnoticed among American art. Antelope canyon has been the location of several feature films. And this location was used to shoot the video I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman by American singer Britney Spears, glorifying the miracle of Arizona to all America and the world.

Upper Antelope canyon
Upper Antelope Canyon is one of the most visited canyons in the state of Arizona (after the Grand Canyon) and is without a doubt the most coveted by photographers. This is due to one of its features, which is that a visit to it does not involve any serious effort. The entrance to the canyon is located at the bottom level and therefore it is very easy to get inside (easier than in the Lower Antelope canyon) — you need to go into the gap between the rocks. However, in the photo inside, it turns out to be incredibly beautiful.
Watch the video about Antelope Canyon:
Translated from the Navajo language, the name of this canyon means “water running through a rocky gorge”. Which accurately describes both the phenomenon itself and the geological origin of this natural miracle. The upper canyon is a fairly narrow strip of gorge that ends in a very wide pool, where sand is washed out from all the surrounding rocks during the monsoon.
All those who want to see one of the wonders of nature in the United States are brought to the entrance to the canyon by drivers-guides in the back of large four-wheel drive cars. Then you need to go on foot in places quite a narrow gorge on the flat surface of the main canyon. The total length Of the upper Antelope canyon is 200 m, and the depth is about 37 m.
A special feature of this canyon is the ability to see the famous rays of light inside (direct sunlight coming through a gap on the surface of the earth in the upper part of the canyon). Since the Upper canyon is much closer to the surface of the earth, the light from the sun penetrates here better, giving more intense illumination of its walls.
The famous ray of sunlight does not appear inside the Antelope canyon every time, but only in Sunny weather and at certain times (this requires that the sun is as high as possible in the sky, and this is only possible in summer). It is considered a great success to see it with your own eyes and capture it in a photo.
Useful tips for tourists: the Best time to visit the Upper Antelope canyon is the period from may to September. In addition, in the summer, you can see two types of lighting in the canyon at once and capture them in a photo. On a Sunny day, the canyon walls don’t look the same in the morning as they do in the middle of the day. Therefore, many photographers go on a tour of the Upper Antelope several times to see and photograph the rich pink lighting of the interior rooms of the canyon, as well as to get blue and purple colors in the photo during the penetration of the direct rays of the sun into the canyon.
